A Playground in London

"Wh... what are you?" I ask him extremely nervous. I had no data on this specimen and it didn't appear benign.

Grey hands were placed behind the Boogeyman's back, as he smirked, stepping toward Eugene.
His nervousness was like fog, rolling from his body in puffy, desirable waves.

"Oh, I'm nothing... just a bad dream...."

I try to keep my rational mind clear but dread has all but swallowed that, "Have you.. any evidence to support this?"

Oh, so this boy was one of those.. calculating types. The logical thinkers who would not believe without a nudge.

Pitch smirked.
"Very well... I suppose I am a bit surprised yyou do not know me; after all, every child is scared of the darkness under their beds at some point. But all the same... You usually were to afraid of your father to bother with the Boogeyman, weren't you...?"

My heart lerches at the thought of Amos and his cruelty towards me and lord knows how many innocents.

Oh, what delicious fear..!
Pitch seemed to perk up at the feeling of it feeding him.
He inhaled deeply, closing his eyes and making an almost purr-like growl of enjoyment at the scent, taste, and feel of the upset.

"Oh, yes, what he did was very horrifying.'I can't say I didn't enjoy the wonderful fear.."
A jagged-toothed grin spread over Pitch's narrow face.
"Come, now, boy... Who do you think I am...?"

"I...think you're a boggart.. only.. sentient.."

"Oh now, really..."

Pitch's tone mixed with boredom, now.
"Be creative.."

"Tell me!!"

Pitch's cruel, crooked grin spread wide over his face.

"I am the Boogeyman, the monster under the bed, the bringer of fear... I am Pitch Black..."

He gave a small chuckle, golden eyes gleaming.

"I find that... improbable. The boogeyman is but a work of fiction." I try to sound more resolute than I feel.

Pitch's smile vanished.
His dark eyes narrowed, lowering his face slightly until he glowered after the opposite boy from the tops of his eyes.

"Fiction....?"

The shadows behind Pitch began to swirl, change, and somehow snarl. The wide eyes of the fearlings glistened as their spindly fingers reached only slightly past Pitch's robe, toward Eugene.

"Oh, you're very, very wrong about that.."

"Well, I'm afraid I need concrete evidence to support this."

An eerie laugh broke from Pitch's mouth.

So the boy wanted a show?
Though it would drain Pitch's power, weaken him for now, Eugene would get a show.



The Boogeyman stepped back into the shadow, disappearing in a cheshire-cat like manner, eyes and grin left gleaming in the darkness for a fraction of a minute before vanishing.
Instantly, shadows stretched behind Eugene, and Pitch once more appeared from out of them.

However, it appeared his wasn't alone this time.
A shadow-bound fake of Phoenix was held by a tangle of hair, a dagger of Nightmare Sand pressed to her neck.

"Let's see your fears.... for one, this girl... you're afraid to lose her.."

"LET HER GO!!" I demand of him as I pull out my wand, trying to swallow my fright with bravery.

The fear given to him from the boy was enough to make Pitch's shoulders tilt back, his back straightening, his grin widening further.

"Oh, you are afraid.... But that's not proof enough...?"

Darkness shrouded Pitch momentarily, and the image of Phoenix faded, changing. The dagger changed to what appeared to be a syringe, pressed to a random man's neck.

"Perhaps your fear of the experiments...? Or your father...?"

"He's not my father!!" I yell at this spawn of satan.

"Oh he's not...?"



Again, the faked being shifted it's appearance. The syringe faded into shadows, and Pitch folded his arms over his thin, bony chest.

The image of Eugene's father was now what had become of the human next to Pitch.

"Tell me, now... do you believe, or must you wait for me to visit you in your sleep...?"

"I.... I...."

The figure of Eugene's father stepped toward him, in front of Pitch.

However, Pitch soon gave a laugh and stepped through the being. Instantly, it disappeared in a puff of shadow and fog.

"Well...?"

"Well....?"

"I believe you to be a monster."

"Monster...? Well, that is close enough. But honestly, you're hopeless..."


Golden eyes rolled to the sky, and an upset sigh broke from Pitch's mouth.
He shook his head, turning his back on Eugene.

"Oh, but I'll tell you I'm not lying.... and if you don't believe me... you best check twice under your bed.."

"I will not be reduced to illogical frights!"

"Illogical..?"


Pitch froze.
His eyes narrowed.

The shadows and fearlings gave snarls of anger from behind him. His lip curled to reveal jagged, sharp teeth.

"Oh, you will be afraid... and it won't be illogical..."
