Query's Maze

Jim bursts into laughter as he goes to stand beside Chase; he grins at Query, that grin that bares his teeth. "No, I understand where Eagle's coming from." He lowers his voice to a whisper. "You didn't get his name."

Chase turns back to Ace, clearly desperate to go over and comfort her, but not wanting to. Who knows what Query's done?

I hold onto Ace tightly, but my grin drops in a heartbeat, "You can't! That's... that's against the rules! You can't do that! That's cheating! That's against the rules!!!" I yell at him in a frantic yell as my heartbeat accelerates to a mile a second.

I start to scramble with the door lock behind me to get me out of there. I have to get away before... before he ruins my game!

Grinning widely now, Jim takes a few steps forward. "You don't know his name, so you lost the game~" he sings. "Oh, Query, I thought you'd be more of a match!" He turns back to Amaya and Chase, shrugging. "Looks like I was wrong!"

"Now is not the time for this," Chase snaps at Jim.

"You won't stop me, it's your fault he lost anyway, Eagle." Jim rolls his eyes. "I'm just proving it to him."

'For a bunch of supposed geniuses, you really are imbeciles.' Amaya muttered, throwing some knives to try and distract Query. She couldn't aim properly out of fear of hurting Ace..

'Calm down Query.' Ace murmured, placing her hand back on his chest. She peered over at Chase again, the mixture of anguish and confusion still haunting her face.

"I haven't lost, the game goes on! I WILL have your name when next we play, but not before then!"

Finally I get the door lock open, finally feeling relief. He didn't tell me the name, the game continues.

'I don't give a fuck about your game!' Amaya hollered after them, grunting in frustration.

she wouldn't be in this mess if you hadn't started it..

She shook off the fact that this was also Chase's fault for participating, for putting his own life before her sister's. 'I blame you for this Eagle.' her voice was deadpan, stepping back.

Chase has to blink and look away, the pain clear in his expression. He turns, twisting his hands into his hair and tugging again. Agony is the only way to describe what he's feeling.

"But you have lost, Query!" Jim laughs, throwing his hands in the air. "You lost this game! You might not have lost the next one, but you lost this one!"

"And YOU Jim... have lost your life!" I pull the top part of my cane out revealing a cleverly concealed gun and I aim it at him and fire.

Not staying behind to find out the results, I run out of the room with Acy in tow.

Amaya dived out of the way, watching in annoyance as her sister and Query sped out of her sight.

How had her sister willingly gone with that creep?

'Why'd you have to involve her in your shitty games Chase? why didn't you just stay away from her?' Amaya dug at the boy, too angry to give a crap about Jim.

Jim leaps out of the way in time, still giggling.

Chase simply falls to his knees and rests his head on them, his shoulders shaking. "I didn't want her to get into this," he gasps, his voice muffled. "It was Query, it was all Query, he dragged her into this I would never..." He trails off, an actual sob breaking free, despite his efforts to suppress it.

'But you didn't exactly stop it, did you? You let him take her away from you, to save your own skin. I would've died for that girl, her life's worth more than mine.' she snapped at him, still furious.

"I love her more than I can put into words, Amaya!" He looks up suddenly, furiously rubbing his eyes with the backs of his hands, but more tears appear. "She is the very reason I am capable of emotion! Without her, I am nothing more than a robot, a tool of justice!

"But you don't understand what it's like to have the burden of Eagle on your shoulders! I am constantly split straight down the middle: one side is me, the other is justice! They tear at me, Amaya, they break me. And as much as I love Ace more than anything else in the world, you must realise that I am not the only one I can think of! There are other people I have a duty to protect as well!"

She inhaled, fists clenching. 'Well guess what? You mean nothing! Eagle means nothing in the long run! want to know why? because you're JUST AN IDIOT!'

Amaya stepped back, preparing to climb the hatch her sister just left out of.

He can't even find the strength to get up. Chase pulls at his hair, not even bothering to hold back his sobs anymore. "I know I'm an idiot! I know I chose wrong! I knew I'd made the mistake as soon as I'd spoken! I regret it and if I could change it, I would! I don't know why I chose that..." He curls in on himself, shaking again.

Jim slips away, a smirk on his face. He lightly pats the wall of the building. "You know where I live, but I know where you live too, Query." He leaves the grounds and returns to Hogwarts.

Amaya finally relented, bending down beside him and taking his hands, wiping away his tears with the end of her shirt. 'We can't go thinking about what could've been, i know you love her, that's why we've got to get her back.'

Her tone was soft, calming. 'You chose to preserve your name because you thought it'd make a difference to your job. Eagle is not you, it is simply a title like i said before. But your name is also meaningless; it's a string of letters.'

He can't help but be a bit confused by her change, but he accepts it without question. "Eagle isn't just me," he says quietly. "Eagle is Ace as well. That's another reason we need to rescue her. Not just because we love her, but because she's needed."
