The Library

'Listen to me.' she cupped his face between her palms, her gaze serious now. 'If you had lost me, i wouldn't be stood here right now. Sure, i might not be in my right mind when i'm around him, but i still came back to you. I was naive; i found him first. You weren't completely to blame.'

she exhaled, wishing she'd said enough to convince him. Ace was the one struggling with her insanity but she'd help him as much as she can.

He blinks, averting his gaze anyway. "But I still chose my own safety over yours. That wasn't right."

She could still feel remnants of hatred shadow her expression, but she stifled it, knowing it wasn't what she really felt. 'Most people would Eagle. I know I wouldn't but... i understand.'

"I couldn't tell him, Ace, I couldn't... I love you, of course I do, but you're not the only one I want to protect."

He turns pleading eyes on her, begging for her forgiveness. "I'm Chase, but I'm also half of Eagle, I needed to make sure that Eagle remained... It was a stupid choice, and I regret it completely..."

'If I'd been in the same position, i would've said my name. But my name's worthless. I don't see what he could gain from knowing 5 letters but..' she gave him a gentle smile, laden with mercy and affection.

'I'll forgive you as long as you become my Chase again.'

"I'll try... Forgive me, I know I shouldn't be asking for this, but I'll need time to adjust back again..."

'I...can't rush you.' it looked like she was chewing glass, but she'd said it nethertheless. 'Although i'd give anything to see warmth back in your expression again.'

"I'm sorry," he whispers, apologising for everything in one.

'Just hug me, please.' she wanted to ask for more, but there was nothing she could do..

He does, holding her tightly, but in no way does Chase feel that he deserves it.

'Thank you Chase..' she whispered softly, letting her head rest on his shoulder. 'For not completely pushing me away.'

"I'm not pushing you away, I never could. I just... I don't deserve this, and I can't bring myself to become who I was again immediately. It's too painful."

'But there won't be any more pain now, you have me...' she gave him another squeeze, trying to be reassuring. 'Remember when I didn't want to be myself again either? You'll only feel empty until you do it, and it'll keep getting worse until you decide to rip the bandage off.'

'You deserve better than me Chase.' she pressed her face close to his, trying not to be too intrusive.

She tiptoed into the library and scanned the shelves for a fantasy book, preferably one she hadn't read before. Which was quite hard when her parents had a library of their own consisting of almost every book in the world. Which she had read through before...three times.

"Did it occur to you that I don't want anyone else?" He raises an eyebrow, a weak smile breaking out across his lips. He swallows, appearing nervous, and then decides just to go for it. "I still love you, Ace."

'I..' she paused, trying to displace the hollowness pitting in her insides again. 'I love you too Chase, always have.' it had been difficult fighting the confusion, but she meant it.

OOC: I have. I had a feeling that was going to happen.

IC: Chase nods with another shaky smile, finally letting his emotions trickle in, little by little. He doesn't show them on his face yet, but he allows himself to feel them.

'One day I'll get that smile back to full capacity.' she put a finger on his lips. 'I will.'

OOC: I just worked it out, and I haven't even been here that much recently :3

IC: He nods again, his gaze softening despite himself. "I know you will."

She didn't ask for anything in return, ignoring the strange feeling of dread in her stomach from her confusion. 'Somehow..' Ace was clearly distracted, trying to rationalise herself.

'I feel kinda off-kilter Chase, like everything's distorted, like I'm breaking.' she whispered quietly, turning her head towards a bookshelf.

Query... soon it'll be too much for her, you'll break her beyond repair, you fool!

"It's alright, Ace, I'm here. I won't leave you again, I promise."

He hesitates, a wave of pain washing over him, but he pushes it away.

Chase holds her hands and fixes his eyes on hers. "You must do what you think is right for you. If you must, ignore both Query and me. I just want you to be happy and healthy, and if that means him..." He trails off, unable to finish.
