'Okay then, i believe you.' She brought the glove close to her chest. 'So...i'll go and hide it again? you know i can't trust you now.'

She nodded. 'Sorry Topher, as long as i don't care what I want from life it'll be safer with me. You should go back to Hogwarts.' She disapparated, using her second location.

Her running and fear had made her find herself in a familiar tattered area, laying a set of pristine white lilies against the churned up earth. One of the petals had already begun to wilt in her trembling hands, but she tried to ignore it. She felt dazed, drifting aimlessly through her actions, an ominously languid air about her. Yet her voice seemed pained, struggling to escape her chapped lips.

‘P-please, tell me what I should do...’ Ace was clearly beyond desperate, seeking advice from someone she’d spent years despising. This person had been an enigma to all her problems, their start and also their end. They were a tormenter.

She could feel his breath on her skin, defiling the air with the stench of overpowering bourbon and cigarettes.

‘Give up, you’ve failed.’ His sadistic grin revealed a row of blackened teeth, stained by years of misuse and carelessness. Her body tensed, but in the pit of her stomach a sense of hopeless was building. She’d known this was going to happen all along, it had been nothing but inevitable.

‘But I tried so hard... it’s supposed to be okay! it was working out!’ she demanded turning to face the man, whose form rippled in the wind.

‘My Francesca, it was never going to be okay, I told you this from the start. All this time, these years, you've wasted it all. You’ve just hurt everyone you love.’ He leaned in closer, breath tickling her ear again. ‘Everyone.’

Air slammed in and out of her lungs, every inhale was a shard of glass ripping the very fabric of her being apart. Bryn, Syd, Query, Eagle... I’ll keep tormenting them..

‘Father.’ She gasped, peering into his grey eyes, but they only reflected her delirious form. ‘How do I make it stop? help me!’ Ace had sunk to her knees, teeth chattering of their own accord, body contorting in and out of her control.

Abonacci remained impassive, like he always did. His spectre billowed in the rising breeze, but his words sliced through any of the noise, resonating with the centre of her mind.

‘Surrender to it.’

In that moment, all of her guilt, her grief and sorrow surrounded her, trapping her in a vortex of irrationality and anguish. She was drowning; it was all she could comprehend. It was so overwhelming Ace was becoming numb to it, the shards of glass still stabbing her, but she was impervious to it. Even Abonacci’s figure drifted apart in her cyclone of confusion.

Slowly, piece by piece, numbness set in, wrapping her essence in a stifling shroud, blocking every fragment of emotion and thought until there was simply a shell left. Not even her family, friends, Eagle or Query could even cross into her being now.

Ace had reduced herself to nothing. Arms wrapping around her knees, she simplt hummed a toneless song to herself.

I will cause no more pain.

The girl heard an owl screech, peering up, as if she were confused by its presence. what would a bird be doing in such a morbid place...?

Ace let the letter drop into her lap, reading the contents.
'What IS wrong?' she turned over the parchment, expecting more.

All she knew was she'd done something bad.
Did i hurt you? it was all she could think of saying.

His footsteps are soft as he approaches quietly, not wanting to make her jump. The only emotion on his face is concern, but inside is more than that. Worry. Worry for them both. And yet he can't tell why.

Detective's intuition gone a little off, perhaps?

"Ace," he murmurs.

The owl that delivered her reply lands on a tombstone nearby and goes about cleaning its feathers. Eagle tils his head to the side as he watches Ace, a slight frown creasing his brow.

She glanced up at him, but she didn't seem to see him, it was like she was boring holes straight through his chest. Her arms coiled around herself, mumbling under her breath.

'Tried so hard... still not ok... never will be ok...'

He crumbles.

Eagle kneels beside her, hesitant to touch her in case she doesn't want him to. He's never seen her in this state before; it's unnerving, confusing, terrifying.

"Love, I don't understand..."

Something familiar about him..

His face brought back a fresh wave of pain, and her mind immediately blotted it out. It had to, or she'd be completely crushed. Her eyes retained their dazed, bewildered look.

'I hurt you.. didn't i?'

"What are you talking about?" he says quietly, sounding baffled. Yes... I've been hurt, but I forgave you. It wasn't your fault. It was Query. "Ace, you're scaring me..."

'I hurt you.' she repeated adamantly, looking frustrated. Ace felt her arms fall to her side, if she'd ever needed a hug, it was now.

He pulls her against his side gently, running his hands up and down her arms in soothing motions. "What do you mean?"

She seemed to relax at the touch, but her mind was in overdrive, trying to fight itself. 'Not... just once. I don't know, i don't know!' Ace gritted her teeth, feeling tears slip down her cold face.

He swallows nervously before speaking, holding her tightly. "Is it... is it something to do with Query?" Please say it isn't, please...

She sensed his fear, his worry, but she didn't know why he was so frightened. 'Who's Query? who are you? I-I mean I.. you feel familiar, but..' Ace struggled again, frustration building.

He freezes.

She doesn't know me. She doesn't know me... Query, you bastard, what have you done?!

"It's me, Eagle," he whispers, not trusting his voice. "Chase..."

'Keep.. keep holding on to me. You feel safe, i like it.' she had to put everything simply, placing her arms around his waist. It felt right, but her mind didn't allow her to recognize him by name.

'I'm..Francesca?' it was more a question, it was the only name circling her head.

"I wasn't going to let go," he promises quietly. "Yes, but you usually prefer to be called Ace..."

'Ace, Ace of hearts.' for some reason, it made her giggle, but it soon ceased. 'What's going on Chase? I can't understand..' Ace used his name without weight, arms squeezing tighter.

He decides then that he prefers to be called Chase. Chase is him, and while Eagle is also a part of him, he isn't him entirely.

... Eagle wasn't even sure that that made sense to himself.

"I don't know either, Ace. I received a letter from you and I followed the owl here... you seemed distressed..."

'I am distressed, because I hurt you, and others..' she was trying to work around the roadblock her mind had put in place, being counterproductive. 'But it doesn't seem so bad now you're here.'
